As graduate workers who have recently won the right to unionize, we, the Graduate Workers of Columbia University organizing committee (GWC-UAW), stand in solidarity with the National Taiwan University Labor Union and urge the university administration and university president Pan-Chyr Yang to begin negotiating in good faith with our fellow graduate workers at National Taiwan University (NTU).
Although the NTU Labor Union has won legal recognition, graduate workers still face unstable employment, encountering the threat of layoffs or pay cuts every semester. The university administration continues to place blame on a declining budget even as their endowment fund continues to expand.
We call on the NTU to publicly commit to the following:
1. Pledge to provide stable employment and fair wages for graduate workers. NTU works because its graduate workers do, and only by making their working conditions secure can the university hope to have a secure future itself.
2. Immediately cease the cynical attempt to fragment solidarity among graduate workers through the two-tiered system arbitrarily dividing teaching and research assistants into “labor” and “learning” categories. Through this system, the university denies basic rights like affordable health care and employment insurance to graduate workers across the university. The workers in both categories perform the same duties and both need and are entitled to the same benefits.
3. Extend to graduate workers the right to full participation in the NTU occupational safety and health committee. Denying graduate workers the ability to represent themselves on this committee is an affront to workplace security.
The Graduate Workers of Columbia University organizing committee supports the NTU Labor Union’s efforts, in our shared goal of improving labor conditions for academic workers worldwide. Furthermore, as our membership include a large number of graduate students from Taiwan, including many NTU alumni, we understand NTU graduate worker rights as an especially personal priority and commit to standing by the NTU Labor Union as they campaign for a better future for their university.
Signed,
The Graduate Workers of Columbia University (GWC-UAW)
